California Notary Public Basic requirements;  18- yrs of age  Legal resident of California 1. Complete a course of study approved by the Secretary of state www.sos.ca.gov/notary 2. Pass a written exam and fill out your notary application (provided at the exam site) 3. When submitting your application you will need; a. Current photo ID b. Proof of completion of mandatory training c. Completed and signed application d. 2x2 passport-style photo e. Live scan fingerprints f. $40 application fee Once your application has been accepted your commission packet will arrive by mail (6 – 10 weeks). Follow the instruction in the packet! 1. Obtain a 15K bond (Bonding Company, Insurance Company, or Notary organization) 2. You must file your bond and take your Oath of office in person at the county clerk’s office within 30-days. Your commission term is for 4-years This Certificate of Authorization must be presented to your stamp maker when ordering your seal. While you are waiting for your commission;  Read your state notary handbook cover to cover  Purchase a journal If you are wanting to become a Loan Signing Agent;  Purchase Errors & Omission insurance  Take the NNA Signing Agent Exam  Pass the Background Check through the NationalNotaryAssociation.com  Set-up your office.
